Voices

You know that ringing sound that you'll perceive while in a dark quiet area? I've done some research and some people may say that that this is an auditory-illusion brought about the ears inability to detect frequencies below the human senses. That's completely wrong. That ringing sound covers up something else altogether. If you are quick, patient and maybe a little lucky, you will be able to hear past the ringing. What you'll hear are voices whispering to each other. They'll silence themselves quickly but with practice. You will become more adapt at catching and interpreting what they are saying. You will hear thing from the past, the present and the future. However, you must be aware, because there is no such thing as a voice without a body.

And when you start noticing them, they will start noticing you...

  1. That was an interesting idea, good for an opening for a story about someone with schizophrenia or something.
This ringing you're describing is called Tinnitus, and results from hearing damage from loud noises. There are no voices heard, just a ringing or buzzing. I'm not sure what else you want us to do here.

    1. I usually get that weird ringing noise when i have migraines. They.... aren't fun.

i love how everyone is getting all scientific-like with the comments.

  2. I don't know how to respond to this… it's good for a story. That's really all I have to say.

    1. Explain how it's good for a story.

    2. I just mean that she could use that idea as a story. With the voices, she could make them into some kind of creature or whatever she wants then put them in a story.

  3. Hmm...I'm all into nerdy science, but this kind of creeped me out. Silence scares me. I went on a retreat when we had to go to sleep in our own rooms without cell phones, clocks, music, or essentially any electronic. That was so hard for me as we had to do it for two nights. It was almost creepy. I wrote a lot and read the Bible. I think humans are so used to noise that the silence is scary. I don't know if this is what you want, but that is my take on silence. I hope I do not hear voices, that would greatly scare me.

  4. I really don't know what to say. I agree with Haley in the sence that humans are so used to noise scares us. I think that sound we hear is something our brain has adapted so that when it's quiet we don't feel vunerable and alone.

    1. what if you let out that same weird noise while dreaming? while dreaming, you're unconscious, paralyzed, and your eyes have REM. and then, this clear, metallic noise comes zeroing out of your ear. high-pitched, too. Wow.

  5. This totally creeped me out cause I'm currently alone in my house, in my room, in the dark, in silence. However I heard people say stuff like "you're never in complete silence because ghosts" imagine doing your math homework in silence and your great great grandma is hovering over your shoulder and screaming the answer into your ear but you can't hear anything. Maybe these whispers are really screams trying to help us or get help..... or hurt us. How crazy of a story that would be, if the main character was in the middle of his/her math homework and started hearing ghosts give him/her the answers?

    1. I'm an only child and on Friday nights I'm normally left home alone, in the dark, and a lot of the time it's completely silent. The feelings is... unsettling to say the least.
And that would be an interesting plot for a quick story, and I could think of numerous twists for it. I would definitely read that.

    2. That would actually be a great story!

  6. Thought that came immediately to mind. Hearing Voices by OneRepublic. Love singing this song... and just about every other song, but that's not the point!
Please listen, and read, if it's your heart's desire.

Anyway, i get the voices in my head when i scroll down lists. Odd, right? Specifically, a playlist. I'm processing all the songs, previewing (in my mind) before i tap which one i want to play. And it's like a flipping orchestra. they blend and mingle and mix in a type of rock, acoustic, folk, instrumental, jazz, a Capella, classical, straining fusion of i don't know what. it's mental preparation for when the voices come aloud from outside of yours ears, not between them. Or, voices could come from a significant event in your life. you could be off in la la land and have conversation's with Princess Diana. or a particularly upsetting set of words that is glued to the front of your skull. See, voices you hear (in or out of your head) don't have to be something creepy. think of it as ... mind echoes. your mind trying to send correspondence to you about... things that mean other.... things.

  7. As someone who finds ghosts fascinating, I believe that everyone in some way can hear the voices of people who have passed. You really only have to believe in something you cannot see, which for some people is a hard concept to grasp.

    1. I too also find the possibility of a life after death fascinating. I respect your own opinion on the matter, and I have come to find that my own personal beliefs are just a re-phrasal of your own as I come to deliberate on the matter.

  8. I haven't read the other comments yet, but this is beyond what I expected for a topic. It's almost as if you are preparing us for Halloween early (which is funny to me because I am currently watching Disney's Tower of Terror).
What I have to say to this may not be considered correct in some people's standards, but I think I know exactly what this is talking about. As crazy as it seems, I've heard these voices before, normally when I lay in bed at night and I am not tired enough to sleep yet. Silly right? Well sometimes I begin thinking about it. Science says it's an illusion, but if we mix a bit of imagination and a bit of mystery with it, what if it were ghosts talking? Science has yet to prove spirits don't exist, and I'm not necessarily sure how they could prove the voices are an auditory-illusion, so why not? If there was something out there, I'm sure they would be talking about us now and again.

  9. When first reading this, I have to admit that I was really creeped out. The second time I read over it, I got goose bumps because I have never really though about it. I always hear noises when I am laying awake in the middle of the night. Most of the time I just ignore; however, the other times, I listen to the sounds and sometimes it freaks me out. I am agreeing with Jasmine on this one because I am currently alone in my house, except my dog is freaking me out. I am petting him and then he hears something and looks off into the distance. It's especially creepy when this happens at night.

  10. I thought this was great! This would be an amazing story starter. I was reading some of the comments above and it seemed as though a lot of people are afraid of the dark, build off of that. It connects the reader to the story!

  11. This is really creepy but kind of interesting. I have had ringing in my ears since i was younger and i thought i had some kind of hearing problem (and it gets worse when i listen to loud music) but maybe its the voices trying to speak to me O_O I've learned to ignore it though because when i focus on the ringing i get a scared feeling for some reason. It also seems to get worse when im trying to sleep and my thoughts start racing.

  12. I guess I'm not sure how to respond to this. It's an interesting topic for sure, but I'm not sure if I believe it. I kinda don't want to either because its a frightening idea. I do agree with everyone else though, it would be a great idea for a story starter.

  13. To me. it wasn't that creepy it was mostly shocking. likes some others its hard to respond to this but it's an interesting topic as many others have said.

  14. This would be an amazing story. I'm slightly jealous that I didn't come up with it, to be honest. You could have, not so much ghosts, but an alternate universe speaking to you. They're in some sort of war and need help, and for some reason there's a a tiny tear and they can talk to you. Condensed like this it sounds really stupid, but I bet written out it would be really interesting.

  15. This is eerie as all heck and I love it. I do enjoy myself a nice horror story once and awhile, and this could be the start of a very brilliant one! The voices driving a person mad hooks me in so nicely. Someone here please write a short story on this concept, unless I do it first. Maybe sometime in the future...

  16. I really love this. It reminded me of Insidious when you said, "when you start noticing them, they start noticing you." I don't know why but this was really entertaining for me, I've taken a liking to creepy things lately. I love this idea and you should develop it farther.

  17. This totally reminds me of my fav. show criminal minds. My favorite character, Reed has shizophrenia and he always talks about his dramatic childhood memories involving it. He gives stories/ details just like this. I love this. This is m new favorite story/ knowledge eye opener.

  18. I don't really know what to say to this. I think everyone hears voices, but it takes a brave person to really listen to them, and not ignore them like most people do. I've never thought too much about hearing sounds, and I don't think I've ever heard voices, other than my thoughts.

  20. I thought this was extremely creepy and i loved it. it left you wondering what the thing was which i thought was great. By not telling us what it is, the monster can vary from what our imaginations think is scary since everyone is different. It was greeat.

  21. I think this is very cool, if you really take time and think I believe the voices are your friends, not enemies. I believe they're people who love you and will do anything to get in contact with you. When it says, "there's no such thing as a voice without body," I believe that means there was a body before, but it lingers invisible to be with you always. I don't know if this makes sense but I'm trying to say that when someone you love dies, they'll always be with you, even if you can't see.

  22. I thought that this blog was good. I liked how you didn't tell us what it is. I leaves you thinking of all the possibilities there are. I really thought that this story showed a lot of images because every one can think of something different.

  23. Ghosts and spirits were the first thing to come to my mind. Just lost spirits trying to get somewhere but regardless, you will never know who those voices are.
