I'm sure most of us have heard the song Forever Young by Alphaville at one point in our lives, whether it be on the radio or in the movie Napoleon Dynamite. In the song, Alphaville speaks of living for, well, ever. I've thought about this and I don't know if I could do it or if I'd really want to. Thinking about it inside the box would be great, but on the exterior we see the downfalls. Living forever would be the hardest thing in my opinion. Over the centuries you would see all your friends and family grow old and slip away.
I can think of a few pros and cons of living forever, but I guess there is no set rule book for it though. Maybe I would do it and just do myself over when I'd had enough. Seeing as I barely even put a dent in the topic, I'm asking you guys to fill my mind with thoughts on it all, and perhaps at the end we can come up with a yes or no answer to living forever.
P.S. -- Happy Mother's Day ! :)
Also here is a link to the song if you haven't heard it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ykvw3X3VIdQ
Happy Mother's Day!
ReplyDeleteI would never want to live forever in this world. It would be utterly miserable and terrifying for me. I would see all my friends "grow old and slip away," as you said, and that would be too much. I do not need to see the rest of my family to the end.
You see, I have a very good reason for not staying on this earth forever, but I won't get all that deep into it. All I will say is that where I'm going will be infinitely better than this broken world, every day of the week.
When I think of living forever, I think you would mean staying the same age? That would suck! I don't want to stay sixteen forever! I want to grow up; I want a taste of real life, no matter how bitter it may seem at first. However, if you do mean just continually growing older; that would be terrible, too. I would grow even wiser, but I would see our world become even more destroyed with every generation added. That does not sit well with me.
In the end, I wouldn't want to live forever, because I am going to a better place in the future.
I hope that answered your question. :D
It was great reading your post. I saw a lot of my feelings on the subject reflected in it :)
DeleteI would not like to live forever because the world is falling apart as it is. We see the effects of global warming now..just imagine years and years from now. I couldn't stand to see the world deteriorate.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking the same thing. Our world is already a garbage dump; I cannot imagine what it will be like in 20 years, much less 100 or even more....
DeleteBecause so many people take the negative side of living forever, I shall be the one to contradict and say that I would, if I had the choice, live forever.
ReplyDeleteI feel as if it would be highly interesting to live forever. The things you could see, the things you could do....It would come at a price, sure, but no one lasts forever now, anyways. It's rare to find that you know all the same people as when you were in fifth grade, even sixth. People move on, people die, people grow apart, people move away....It's endless. Even when we are still alive, we see the people around us shift and change to other people. It would be no different to live forever.
Many of you will probably bring up the issue of "true love" and family. Well, to be honest, even they leave too. it's brutal, but the saying "Parents aren't forever" rings very true. It's highly likely that your parents will die before you, and therefore you will have to suffer the loss at some point and time. The same goes for most other family and friends. For true love, too.
I feel as if I could go on about this topic all day, but sadly I have other things to attend to. You have my answer, and I hope it is well heard.
I liked the twist on it, and I suppose that I too would like to see the different developments on, well, life itself.
DeleteYou bring up good pts.. but I still disagree. Humans shouldnt live forever.it's not natural and after awhile I believe the human would be utterly bored with the world and cause chaos among others.
DeleteI've thought about this once before. Living forever is only for vampires & from what most of them say in movies, they hate hat they have to out live everyone. I can see how after awhile life would seem to lose it's purpose.
ReplyDeleteI'm also the believer of an after life and forever happiness after death on Earth. If I had to chose between living forever on earth or in heaven ... I'd chose death on earth to get to that everlastin happiness that s waiting for me up there:)
maria, i agree with you one hundred percent. it would totally be worth dying if you consider whats waiting for you in heavean.
Deletei think that i would absolutely hate it. sure it would be cool to see the worlg 500 years ahead of our time but we would take it for granite. all the small things in life would no longer be as memorable or have as much meaning to us anymore.

Deletei like that you brought up the fact that we really wouldnt remember the little things in life.
DeleteI agree, people would begin to surpass the little things.
DeleteAgreed. Without that appreciation, we would overlook the small--yet awesome--things that life has to offer.
DeleteLike Dominick said, it would be a virtural hell to be in because of te simple fact that it would maybe be cool to not get old and you dont have to worry about dying but at some point you will practically die with out dying because you will eventually lose everything that makes you you. sooner or later you wont even be truely happy because you would be use to the little things that happen during our everyday life.
ReplyDeleteI agree completely. This world will suck to live in no matter what. That's why I would think of it as a show. Humans are so funny when they realize that their ignorance will be the source of their own demise. It IS reality TV haha.
Delete...it would be like hell. Because in hell you WANT to die, but you cant.
DeleteLiving forever? Not for me. Honestly, I think the natural process of life and death is a beautiful thing. i could also not stand seeing my loved ones go before me. I think if a person were to live forever they would become so knowledgable that no one could even think to be on their mental level, thus making them go crazy with all of the stupidity around them!
ReplyDeleteSomeones life is most beautiful when they're not there anymore. Sadly, that's what most starvign artists have to deal with. look at this icon. It's many artist's life-story: http://fav.me/d48w5s2
DeleteI wouldn't mind living forever. Chaos and destruction is fascinating to watch. As long as I could stay young forever I would want to. Watching the human race change and even deteriorate would be an experience in itself. The madness is something I want to view so that I could watch the world turn it on itself. I'd learn nothing, but I would get some entertainment from it. People questioning why bad things are happening is enough to make me laugh. If we weren't so ignorant and thick as humans we wouldn't have that problem. Man won't walk the Earth as long as the dinosaurs did just because of the way we are now.
ReplyDeleteI think that I'd get bored, because we humans repeat ourselves too much. Although advances in technology would be cool to see, but living year after year would be....boring.
DeleteLiving forever has never really consumed my imagination too much--living and dying with having lived a fulfilling life is what it's all about. Without death, I don't believe life would ever be as fulfilling; there would be no immediacy to live life to the fullest. We were meant to live and live for a definite amount of time. This way, we can heartedly appreciate what comes next.
ReplyDeleteIndeed, Like how there is no dark without light, or good without evil.
DeleteIn my opinion, Living LONG would be good, but I couldn't do forever....at least on earth. Earth is a terrible, corrupted place that is ever deteriorating because of devalued morals and such. Basically--earth sucks. Too much for me to want to live forever. And in the words of a song I just remembered--"Everybody dies, but not everybody lives..."
