Hopefully, the title is fairly self-explanatory; however, there are
still some specifics that need to be clarified.
I am challenging each and every one of you to create an entirely
original character to share with the class.
The character can be a protagonist, antagonist, or
secondary/supporting character. If you know what role you want him or her to
fill, be sure to explain it somewhere in the character description, please. If
you don't know where your character would fit in (such as a situation where you
just don't know what sort of character he or she would end up being
for whatever reason), don't feel pressured into making the decision; just tell
us that his or her role is undecided.
First, you should include the character's name. It doesn't need to be
the first detail you decide on; in fact, you may want to wait until you have
completed the character before picking a name you think fits the character.
Second, please provide a physical description. Is the character tall?
Short? Somewhere in between? Is he or she blonde? Brunette? A redhead? What
color are his or her eyes? Is the character human, or is he/she an
elf/alien/other non-human life form? Remember, your character can
be anything and have any physical characteristic you desire!
Third, you shouldn't forget their personality: kind or malevolent, shy
or outgoing, cheerfully optimistic or sarcastically cynical, nonviolent or
hostile, patient or anxious? Anything goes, but try not to contradict yourself too often!
This next step is optional, of course, since I realize that not every
character necessarily requires special powers. However, I
would suggest giving every characters you create, even the ones you currently
intend to give perfectly normal lives, powers of some sort, even if you don't
use them in that specific story you had planned, just in case you recycle a
character for a different story. After all, you never know when you'll need a
mindreader, shapeshifter, or telekinetic character.
Optionally delve into their past. What happened to your character, or
someone close to him or her, that made that character the person he or she is
today?
A few things to remember: your character needs to have some sort of
flaw, whether a physical disability, something in their mentality that prevents
them from functioning the same way as an "average Joe" in everyday
society, or something else that makes them a little more "human"; try
to avoid making them too perfect or all-powerful (readers
and writers alike tend to find themselves disliking those types of characters very
quickly, even if they're the ones who created the character).
There is no shame in making an overly normal, average, or otherwise
unremarkable character, especially if he or she is meant to give another
character a sense of reality in a crazy world filled with various strange
powers. However, the "normal" overall image of this type of character
doesn't necessarily have to be how he or she is deep down; perhaps he or she
has special powers that the character never knew about prior to the beginning
of his or her story. Overly normal characters don't have to be as normal as
they first seem; just because the "logical and intelligent
sidekick" role is practically in their job description doesn't mean you
absolutely have to put them in that kind of role. Normal characters can be
just about anything, so they aren't necessarily a bad thing.
By the same token, don't be afraid to make an overly odd character,
especially if that character ends up dragging another character into a crazy
world of magic and mystery. However, an odd character could be the main
character, with his or her overly normal companion preventing him or her from
going completely insane from the powers they struggle to control. On the flip
side of the proverbial coin, a "normal" character can be a
character dragged out of the "normal" world he or she once knew by an
overly odd character.
I hope I was able to give all of you some form of inspiration
somewhere within my rambling. I really hope you all have fun creating your
characters!
Good
luck~!
Well, I had this REALLY weird dream the other day, and I wrote it down, so here you go!
ReplyDeleteMain character:…?(I'm thinking guy)
So in this happy perfect land, everything is, well, perfect. But then one day, something's wrong. People start acting funny, mean and only careing for themselves. And then, that's when the disease hits. At first people think that's just what it is- a disease. But then it manifests itself in many different ways. These little orbs start following specific people, and people start disappearing. Then things get worse. Water starts to turn black and these big scorpion things start to roam this oldish looking town/city. Then scorpions grow exponentially and start attacking people, anyone infected (which is almost everyone). Some people who aren't infected hide underground, but there is one person that can sense the orbs and scorpions- the main character. He also hides underground and is frightened by his ability, but he finds that he can't sense them if he crouches down/sits. (the sensing is somewhat like when they close their eyes, it feels like a grid or map is on the back of their eyelids, and the bad guys are these red dots on it.) So the rebels/hideaways train to fight off the things if they need to, and many want to because they've lost their family to the "disease". Then after a long time (a couple weeks maybe?), they emerge from their shelter not only because they think it's safe, but because they need supplies. Even the guy isn't scared because he can't "see" anything. So they leave and the city is a mess, not only is it deserted, but it's like a wasteland, the only problem is, the people are wondering, since when have they been in a valley? (Uh-oh) They're all calm, and then kinda like what, then a little tension as they strain to see (because the sun is coming over it, so it's hard to see), and then gasps all around as they realize that it's a mountain of… (they really don't know what it is, but it's gross looking, like muscle fiber or cells. It's disgusting) Then then realize what it's must be- "eggs" for the scorpions/disease. The people had noticed those things on the sides of roads when the disease had started but no one had done anything because they were just like- meh! Not only that, but the mountain is covered in those scorpion things.
(the thing won't let me type more, so look at the next post)
The guy then gasps because they couldn't "see" those. (RUUUUUNN!!!!!) hoping no body noticed, they go back into their hide-out and pray they didn't notice. But of course, they did… and the MC is hyperventalating in the corner, curled up into the fetal position. The leader of the group slaps them of course and is like "you need to pull yourself together". Somehow, MC ends up having to explain that they can "see" what's happening, and it's horrific. Instead if little dots here and there, it's as if someone had a countertop, and it was covered in black dirt (the people), then someone just decided to wipe all that dirt, just to reveal a blood-red counter. That's basically what was happening behind his eyes.(((*wow, this is starting to sound like matrix*))) then as theyre coming up with a plan, they hear a hissing and a light scratting on the door. (everyone holds their breath) And then it stops… dramatic silence. Then someone drops a pencil and the door bursts open, and the scorpion things start devouring the few people there, an some of them just get held tightly, EXCEPT for MC… he is just curled up in a ball in the corner. Then through the hissing, he hears talking, a womanish voice as this creature that resembles a girl walks up. In doing so, she keeps talking to him about random crap like "we've always been able to 'see' you here" and crap like that. But then she gets uncomfortably close (keep in mind that MC is in a corner) and she kneels down and whispers in his ear more random crap about how he's different than the others and that she needs him. But you know, he's a coward so he's just shaking and turns his face away as she is practically a centimeter away from his skin, just enjoying the scent (or just enjoying making him feel awkward). Then she decides to leave and let the humans come up with their plan, and leaves about 7 of them from the original 12.
ReplyDeleteI still haven't come up with what happens next (because that's where my dream left off...-_-;) But basically the main character is a cowardly guy that can "see" these things, and apparently this power is needed by the scorpion thingys. At first when the people found out about his power, they were freaked, but then they were all military style like--"we cant worry about that kind of crap right now!" So yeah. My dreams are REAAAALLLY weird...
I tried to think of what to say to this because I felt an overwhelming urge to reply, but then I burst out laughing because I realized that this was too messed up (in a good way) to have anything to say that would do a justice. Oh and just so everyone knows, my parents looked at me weird when I burst out laughing.
DeleteHahahah, thanks Andra!
DeleteSorry i forgot to mention this before, but the guy has dusty brown hair, kinda scrawny to mid-build, and is in his mid-twenties. I don't really know much else about him...
So my character dosn't come with an elaborate dream that requires two full comment things, but I think mine will still be worthy of writing a new story for.
ReplyDeleteSteel bars and concrete floors were all I saw walking down the narrow hallway of cages. A guard jabbed me in the back, wanting me to walk faster. My short, grimey, black hair hung in my eyes as I scoweled at the ground. Male inmates yelled profanities at me from all sides. I had to go past them to get to where the girls' cells were. Their shouts and the guard's shoves were slowly chipping away at my self control. If it wern't for the fact that I was in the most structured place on Earth, I would be a tornado of fury whipping around, punnishing all of them.
They locked me up in a cell with no one but myself. There was a bed, a toilet, and a mirror. I looked in the mirror and saw an angry little girl filled with hate. She was dirty and greesy, the kind of person you cross the street to avoid. Not of fright though, just so you could avoid the smell that anyone could see clouding around them. She had the face of a baby, being only 18. The hate that was there belonged to the face of a hardened criminal who had spent their whole life in jail for the murder of their sworn enemy.
The girl in the mirror was not me. I was a cleen, well kept, proper rich girl. I was a graduate of New York's best private school. Daughter of the owner of half the hotels in the city. The most delicate, polite, and happy girl you could ever meet. I had anything I could ever want and more before I could even ask. I was smart, popular, pretty, nice, and everything else you would expect from such a privliged teenager. I know you're asking why I'm here if my life is so perfect.
I am in prision for a murder my twin sister commited.
That's so cool! I wasn't expecting the twist at the end. This would be an AWESOME intro to a story!!!
DeleteI genuinely LOVE this challenge/post. Great job, Sam. LET THE CHARACTER GAMES BEGIN!!
ReplyDeleteA shadow. The only thought that ever crosses one's mind when they see Nobody. Just a shadow.
ReplyDeleteBut he's -not- just a shadow. He has thoughts, he has a name, he moves as if by his own free will, and observes the world around him. He is eternally inquisitive, and as silent as one can be.
Nobody lives his days out, however far-stretching, observing. His interest peaks with certain people, and that's it; he's hooked. He dives into their very existance, trailing them around and observing their life. Copying their movements. Becoming their shadow.
But Nobody isn't the only one out there. There are other Nobody's out there, and some of them aren't as content to just watch....
And suddenly, the sullen and quiet Nobody is thrust into something too big for his small form. He finds himself guarding an oblivious child, no more than four years old, from the entire shadow realm.
Looking out the window, I wanted to scream. It wasn't fair that i was locked up in this dungeon, my cell, and they got to be outside. I wanted to feel the sun on my face, bask in it's warmth, maybe even get a sunburn. I wanted to be normal...As the tears welled up in my eyes, I heard footsteps above me. Quickly pushing the shelf in front of the window, hiding it, I ran past the stairs and jumped into bed. Across the room, I could see myself in the mirror. Pale, too pale to be human it seemed, with my light blue eyes and white hair, I looked like i was a hospital patient. Even though I was 15, the last time i felt the sun on my skin was 10 years ago. It was the last time my parents loved me. I had developed a rare allergy to the sun and they were so ashamed they kept me locked up in the basement, away from the world, because I wasn't "normal". The only time i saw them was IF they brought me food. Which sometimes wasn't for days.
ReplyDeleteI have easily over about 20 different characters that all are completely individualized who all play a role in this one story. Now my main character is one I choose to leave nameless. She does have one, but something very interesting will happen in the near future that will actually bring her to life. This character is one I have spent a total of 5 years and counting. She has black raven-like hair pulled up in a tight ponytail with it being spiked as sharp as a cactus. Her right eye is a warm, comforting lavender color and her left is a bright emerald green. Over her face a masquerade mask hides her upper face. It hides her past along with the rest of her. She's an average height wearing a royal blue trench coat. The lining of her cuffs, zipper, and ending out the coat are a sparkling silver meant to represent starlight. She holds a close bond with the moon having complete control over the universe. She's the strongest sorceress alive wielding all powers possible. With this she created a world on the line of fantasy and reality where her subjects known as the Blindfolded live.In this realm is where she resides with her warriors sworn to defend Love and eternal happiness. This character holds many secrets and the only one that knows are the recorder. My character is surrounded by mystery therefore I cannot give out many details about her, but I can say that she is a very dear friend and a beloved queen.
ReplyDeleteThe simple noise agitated the young creature. It stirred, the buzzing sound getting louder and then dying down. The creature's eyes, one an electric blue and the other silver with a green sliver in it, opened slightly and the white pupil inside contracted to a speck. Its thin, frail, emaciated body shuddered with every breath, giving the impression that each one was a struggle. Indeed, this tiny little bug was what woke this creature up from a long, long nap. It had been 'sleeping' for about three days total; its condition had caused it to collapse. The creature shakily got to its feet, resisting the urge to cry out. It felt like one giant bruise. Its entire body hurt. In height, this creature was only a foot and a half tall, and its coat was entirely black. Its eyes stuck out amidst all the dark like lightning in the night. The creature looked around, and upon doing so, found a small, blood-stained portion of a shard of glass. It found its eyes and yelped, only to realize that they were its own. It peered inside, and suddenly greatly regretted doing so.
ReplyDeleteScout cried, as if shards of her heart were coming out of her mouth with the words. She screamed at the top of her lungs; no one could hear her. They were too busy. Her parents had been running for their lives, but the valiant effort had failed. They lay on the ground, eyes open wide. Tears were in both of their eyes, knowing that they had failed their only living child for the last time. She looked around, finding a small mirror and looking at her reflection. That was the last time she had seen herself in a mirror.
The scar of the flashback burned like a worn-out tape-recorder in her mind, and she gasped and shook her head, backing away from the glass. Tears streamed from her eyes like a waterfall, and she ran far from the glass, far from the cover of the forest. She ran into the pure light of the full moon, but that was not the reason this creature was so terrified. This wolf, this full-blooded, tormented, alienated wolf; her silhouette was the only thing she could see in the half-light. Her sonic-speed was taking her faster than she had ever gone before. Suddenly, there was another silhouette above her- this one was four times bigger than she and grew bigger every few seconds. Finally, it tackled her, and she yelped fearfully until they came to a stop. She looked up and also regretted this. She looked right into the eyes of the one wolf she feared more than anything in her small world: he was Kira, her parents' killer.
All I have to say is WOW! You have great use of detail and this was great!! Keep writing!:)
DeleteI really like this post I have to say! Let's see here, my character is a little girl named Iris who has the wildest imagination. She is able to see into people's eyes and make them feel what she feels. She can also create alternative worlds with the information she learns from strangers. Iris can take these strangers into their own world essentially created by them. She's 5 years old with honey brown skin and dark secretive hair to her waist. Her eyes are hazel but turn steel grey when she is looking into someone's soul. Iris is a timid girl but once you get to know her her personality shines. Her mother allows her to dress herself every morning. Her favorite outfit is her sparkly purple top, blue jeans with splattered paint, and light up shoes. She had an older brother and a father who were killed by the Royals; a group of others like Iris who use their powers for evil. Her father and brother had the same powers. She is next to be slain but in the "agreement" made for people with special powers no one can be 'poached' until age 10. She lives a hard, yet good life. The world around her is full of people with gifts. The normals are the odd outcasts who are segregated from the specials. Iris attends a school for the gifted where her imagination is allowed to run free. I would say Iris is a main character mostly a protagonist until she gets older and realizes what she can do with her powers. She has to make friends with the Royals to stay alive. She soon falls in love with one of them (That is an another post alone).
ReplyDeleteMy character is Nikkolette. She's a thirteen year old girl with many different special "powers", but she considers them curses since it's frowned upon to use them in her town. She can control people's emotions, but only when the emotions are at there highest levels; she can see someone's past everytime she looks directly into thier eyes, she can change people's personalities, and she can make people dissapear. Her hair is light blonde color with brown and caramel highlights, and her eyes are a deep green color when she isnt using her powers and a deep blue when she is. Her parents were taken away by the Seers, council of the town, of the town, and she has to run the orphange her parents left after the Seers took them and take care of her five younger siblings. Her two older siblings cut off all contact with her family when they escaped the town. Her whole family has special ablities, and it's frowned upon to use them so they created a clan of them and are trying to find ways to take out the Seers.
ReplyDeleteThe echo of his footsteps emanated over the immaculate marble staircase. He recovered his posture hastily after recognizing this first- and almost conspicuous- hint of his presence. This boy has been a subject to the tower's beauty and power for nearly a year now; his confidence in his whereabouts was evident. The towering, magnificent door embellished with golden beauty from which he arrives into the tower emphasized the gaunt nature of the young boy of only eleven years. He picked up his small knapsack and placed it to the side of his coat, then proceeded to fix his glasses. He wore a grand smile over his face marked with the pain and oppression of ordinary life. Facing the grand hallway, Maurice strode with excited valor past the uniform staircases and elegant doorways. Maurice's dark hair bounced about his calm forehead and landed neatly above his eyebrows. His aquiline nose took prominence over his face and classified him as a French boy. His smile was genuine and promised all the innocence that childhood professed. It was his magnificent, light grey eyes that reflected his independence and singularity from the uniform world in which he breathed and complied to the tedious nature of everyday affairs. He reached the last doorway and crouched down on the threshold.
ReplyDeleteMaurice was always intrigued by the conversation behind room 413.
Sorry for the lack of character development; to fully do so would obviously require a whole story-line. I find it crucial for the character to undergo changes in "personality" that define who they are and how the occurrences within the story influence that. Nonetheless, I attempted here to establish Maurice's innocent curiosity and build his silent resentment to the everyday world.
This was a neat blog post; I genuinely enjoyed this challenge that you outlined! You have a truly fantastic imagination that is unique to you.
My character is a guy. His name is Tom. He's five foot ten with a toned body and deep brown, tantalizing eyes. His hair is dark brown and it never falls quite the same way. He has a great sense of humor and is a loving, compassionate person. But Tom also has a large, noticeable scar running from the tip of his chin to his right eye brow.
ReplyDeleteHe lives in Pennyslvania with his parents who are both doctors. His younger brother is a football star and secretly, he is quite jealous of the attention he is given. He's in the school band and is somewhat of an outcast. he appears to be happy to the average person, but deep down, he's lonely. He wants that one person who cares about him. He puts on a fake smile every day to hide his pain.
But this all changes when he meets a girl named Ellie in a chatroom. Well, duringthe story, they fall in love.
The story would be about Tom and his awkwardness before he met Ellie and while they became close.
Ellie Rivera is my name and i'm not what you'd call normal by any standards. I may look like a "plain Jane," with straight red hair, golden brown eyes, slender and petite, but deep down I carry around a secret that's both dangerous and beneficial.I almost always get what i want and i probably know you better than anyone else ever could. At this momemnt, i have just escaped Area 51, my mom was shot for trying to protect me, and i'm just beginning my journey for vengence. Nobody, it think, nobody has the right to destroy a person's complete life and not have to pay for it. This secret has just led me to being hopelessly stranded. The only thing that keeps me going now is the hatred running through my veins for Dr. Drake. I will find that bastard and that wont be the last thing i do, but the first.
ReplyDeleteThe character is a young sixteen year old boy who walks ghostly through the halls of his high school. The boy is not liked by most people, mainly for the fact that he dresses in black and is very shy. He loves music that scares most and he paints his fingers black. He is bullied daily far the way he looks on the outside. He just wishes that he could have some one to accept him for who he is. This boys name is Jeramiah and he has a secret. He, unlike anyone else, is able to read minds. Now this is like poison for him because a lot of the things he hears at school are torturous to him. He hears everything that everyone thinks about him and this makes him very mad. But one day he meets his soul mate. The story would be that he meets a girl with a super power just the same as him.
ReplyDeleteWell that's a cawinky dink! My character also reads minds. That's the "secret" :)
DeleteMy characters name is Sabrina, she is the protagonist in this specific story. She is tall and skinny with blonde short hair. Personality wise she is nice when she wants to be ( which is rarely), shes violent and rude to people she doesnt know, like, or if they give her dirty looks. I cant really tell you her past mainly because it's a really big part of the story its self so itll ruin the whole thing. One thing that stands out about my character Sabrina is that she has this scar that starts above the right side of her lips and it disapears at her hair line but you can still see it alittle. this is my character :)
ReplyDeleteMy character is named Anna. She's a young teenage girl who has been in many foster homes because her mother has a severe mental disorder which makes her dangerous towards Anna. The story is about how Anna goes through life wondering what it would be like if things were different. Anna has troubling thoughts and slowly begins to hear voices day after day and wonders if she is going to go down the same path as her mother, or if she can flee the "demons" inside herself.
ReplyDeleteNicole, this actually sounds VERY interesting. PLEASE, make this story. I think it would be quite beautiful when finished. And if ever you finish it before the end of the school year, I can give you my email address so you can send it to me to read. I love these kind of stories. They are so different than the traditional, they deserve a category all their own!
