It's the breath you cannot take;
It's the tightening in your chest;
It's the crying-
Oh god, the crying.
It's like a Greek tragedy,
Being sent to Hades
And despite how temporary it is
Each attack feels like an eternity in the Fields of Punishment
And no one seems to notice,
Or want to understand
That you're drowning in your own fears.
They tell you, “just breathe,”
As if it was that easy,
As if you're not trying.
“You're being ridiculous.”
As if you don't know.
But you can't control it-
Because it controls you.
And then it starts again;
The trouble breathing-
The crying-
The trip to Hades-
An eternity of constant panic.
As a person who has had an occasional anxiety attack this poem encompasses the essence of what is going on. How you can't breathe. You can't focus. How everyone who tries to help makes it worse in a sense. I understand. And love this.
ReplyDeletevery well written, the poem walks people through what it is like, to where they can get a better feel for something that they do no understand themselves.
ReplyDeleteI really love this poem because I can relate to this so much. I've had quite a few anxiety attacks this year because of stress and all people tell you is to calm down" or "just breath." We know to try and calm down and to breath but the poem is 100% right of how it pretty much controls you for a while. This does a great job expressing what it feels like, and what its like having an anxiety attack.
ReplyDeleteWow! This is deep! I like the lines where it says

This is my favorite part.

The line "because it controls you" gave me chills. I really like this poem. As someone who hasn't had really any experiences with anxiety or panic attacks, I got a whole new perspective through this. I feel I have a different understanding of these situations.
ReplyDeleteThis is amazing. Coming from a person who has experienced many anxiety attacks, I can relate to this poem very well. The things people say to try to help essentially makes the situation worse and it feels as if an elephant is standing on your chest. This was great.

ReplyDeleteThis is really good and really deep. It takes a bried look into the mind of a person with possible anxiety and i love it.
ReplyDeleteI never had anxiety attacks but I do have fears that people think are really easy to overcome. Overall a very good poem though.
ReplyDeleteThis is really strong. I feel like I have this had happen to me before. But it has not truly happen to me but I can imagine it though

ReplyDeleteI loved reading this because it was so strong and so pure. It reminds me of the things I feel during on of my panic attacks and I relate so much to this. This is truly so honest and I love it because people do tell you to just calm down and just breathe but it's not that simple.
ReplyDeleteI'm honestly at a loss for words with this. it's incredible in ways i can't even begin to describe

ReplyDeleteThis poem is strange to me. It's like half of me totally understands and relates to it, and the other half has no idea what is going on (that's a good thing). We all have our inner demons, and this poem explains them quite well. I also like the use of the Greek God to further explain.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great poem that is easy to connect with. I have had instances before where anxiety attacks have affected me, and I feel bead for people that have to deal with them regularly
