Master Pieces

Have you ever seen a masterpiece before? What would you constitute as a "masterpiece?" There is no universal definition because of its subjective nature; they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. But when you look upon crafted magnificence, you KNOW what you're beholding.

However, this is not a place to muse about past masterpieces. I want to have a conversation about what YIELDS masterpieces. So we will start with these questions:

Does the level of "masterpiece" exist, and if so what piece must be mastered to make a masterpiece?

To elaborate, you are all artists! You have your artistic toolbox, and you've stood (I hope) in the ambience of aesthetic brilliance before. What PIECE of your artistic PUZZLE do you need to MASTER in order to create a MASTERPIECE?

  1. A level of masterpiece does not exist. Although, to create a masterpiece the passion of the artist must be evident. Without passion from the author the reader will never be fully immersed in your piece.

    1. I would have to say I agree with you about the author and how if you do not have an author then the reader would not now the true mean of what a master peace could be in you mind.

    2. I think a masterpiece does exist. There's very few true masterpieces but the key part of a masterpiece to me is something that leaves many speechless, many who are amazed and blown away, something that will inspired people, and most importantly something where there is nothing left to add on.

    3. Part of me wishes that "masterpieces" did not exist, but I have seen too much of this world to speak that untruth. I have seen them. They do exist. I know because I have been moved and changed by them.

    4. I think a masterpiece is when you make something that you're passionate about with a lot of effort. It's something that you are proud of making, and once you're done, you take a step back and say, "Yes, this is MY masterpiece!"

    5. A masterpiece by definition is a magnificent piece of art or sculpture. A masterpiece doesn't always have to be something you can grab. A masterpiece can be something you see in your mind, or something that you hear that moves you. A masterpiece can be a part of nature,or even a human creation

    1. I could not agree more if you read through any on writers such as Emily Dickinson or even William Shackspher. Both of these writers are know for there work because they keep the reader interested.

  3. I agree that the artist must feel their work to make others feel the same way, but that is what makes a masterpiece. The level that is masterpiece does exist, because there is art work that does not have the same feeling as others and that difference sets pieces of work apart, setting the scale of master work.

    1. If beauty is in the eye of the beholder wouldn't the masterpiece also be in the eye of the beholder. Yes there may be different quality of work. But a level of masterpiece seems as if it cannot exist due to the diversity in opinion.

    2. Yes, but also no. It's a paradox. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and masterpieces are, by nature, subjective; however, at the same time masterpieces DO exist! Crazy.

    3. Mr t, I agree, a masterpiece can be something created in nature, like a mountain,or a lake. Everybody sees things differently

  4. I think the heart is the most important part of a work. Everything flows from that--a masterpiece to me was always a work that so deeply affected me that I cared. Sometimes I cried, sometimes I got so angry I couldn't see, and other times I laughed so loud I scared my cat out of a rather deep sleep. But the most important part of any story whose journey I was a part of is that it felt like more than a story, like it was as important to the writer as life itself, and I felt that importance with a deep rooted responsibility to love and care for that which was so lovingly crafted and given to the world.

  5. Any time I have ever heard an artist talk about their "masterpiece" one thing they all have in common is confidence. They all believed that they could make something amazing and were determined to do so. If you ever want to make anything that will be considered a masterpiece you must be determined and have at least some amount of confidence.

    1. I absolutely agree with this. Confidence comes through in work, no matter what form, and confidence is contagious.

    2. Matt--does that mean that ANYTHING can be a masterpiece if it is constructed and/or discussed confidently? Are there any PRE-qualifications to the masterpiece being constructed?

  6. I believe that there are true masterpieces in this world. However, the question "what piece must be mastered" is impossible to answer because a masterpiece has many components in itself that give it it's title of a masterpiece. One cannot pin point one exact "thing" that makes certain masterpieces masterpieces, because there is so much greatness in them that one component is equally as great as the others.

  7. The level of "masterpiece" is subjective, and therefore does not exist. No one sees anything the same way. What I may find to be absolutely magnificent, someone else may find it to be far too plain and commonplace.

  8. I believe that we are continuously growing and as we grow and as we improve the vision that we see as a masterpiece grows with us. As we start to understand thing more and get better with our own work we expect more and more and what we see as a masterpiece becomes something set at a higher standard. Everyone has their own masterpiece but once they obtain the same level as their old masterpiece their new one changes.

    1. This made me think, as we age, the vision we have of a masterpiece changes, so would the masterpiece also change in the eyes of its viewer? I googled images of masterpieces, and what comes up is a lot of paintings; Mona Lisa, Starry Night. But in say 200 years, I think it's unlikely that these things will be seen as masterpieces, as they are viewed today, you know? So does the concept of a masterpiece change, what was once seen as a master piece is nothing in years to come?

    2. Kayla i really like what you are getting at and how true it is. Will those paintings be the amazing things they are now or will we see a new form of masterpieces in museums.

  10. I don't believe that a level of masterpiece exists. "Masterpiece" is something that can only be personally defined. An observer may see an art piece as a masterpiece, while another sees it as boring and plain. A work needs passion and effort for it to be worthwhile, but something undefinable to be a masterpiece.

  11. "Art begins with resistance - at the point where resistance is overcome. No human masterpiece has ever been created without great labor." Andre Gide

I believe that one needs master the art of RESILIENCE in order to be able to create a masterpiece. You can't simply give up in the face of adversity. Too many in our current culture preach messages of "easy," "effortless," and "smooth sailing" as ways of life, discrediting the innumerable benefits of struggle, pain, and, in the face of adversity in all of its forms, perseverance! Take heart, steel yourself, and fight for your art.

    Believe in thy butter.

  12. The level of a masterpiece is only seen by an on looker the writer/artist does not wake up one day and say I'm going to paint or write a masterpiece. A masterpiece is made by those who love that persons work.

    1. I agree to this 100%. a master piece cannot be created in a day. I think it takes many years to create one if you can

  13. I would say that a level of masterpiece does exist, but it's seen differently between each individual. To create a masterpiece, i would think that emotion has to be put into what you're creating to try and have others understand you and what you are trying to show.

  14. A masterpiece depends on if the artist put their all into the work. If someone only does a "rough draft" of the piece, and never goes back to make sure that everything is perfect and how they want it, then how can they say they created a masterpiece. It either is or it is not a masterpiece.

  15. I believe that there is no "Level" of masterpiece and that if you want to create a "masterpiece" you have to put as many emotions as you feel comfortable putting into your writing.

  16. I believe the level of a "masterpiece" does exist. But it exists differently to each and every person. In your eyes something may be a masterpiece but to someone else it could be a piece of junk. I believe for something to be a masterpiece you have to like it. Others have to love it.

  17. To create a masterpiece you can't only master one thing. A story has several components that make it wonderful, and you need to master each part in order for it to be called a "masterpiece" by anyone. Hence, "master"piece.

  18. I would like to believe that there is a level of masterpiece, but it would be specific to the creator themselves because it can almost be certain that no one sees the piece the same way as the creator. So in theory with the author being the only person to deem it a masterpiece in their own eyes, likewise are the components of said masterpiece- they are up to creator to determine. It would be the same way for a viewer. Everything is subjunctive.

  19. The level of masterpiece does indeed exist. The piece that must be mastered is the thing you are good at. Once you have mastered it, that's when something can become a master piece. For my master piece to be complete, I must become a better writer.

  20. I believe that the level of masterpiece does exist; however, it is not as black and white as it may seem, there are many stages a person must reach before the possibility of reaching masterpiece. The first step that a person must take, is complete submersion in their art. After that, they must reach complete understanding. However, what I believe to be the most important step is complete humility in the art. You must not write or draw because you believe yourself to be good at it; you must create your art because you have no other choice, because it is who you are.

  21. Could it be possible, that like many things there are different levels of a masterpiece? In a worldly view, the Earth, the Grand Canyon, the ocean. A more, say, cultural view, art, the Mona Lisa, a story, a song, a painting. But also a personal view, to a mother, her child; to an architect, his final, completed dream building; to a cook, his perfect steak meal. I think masterpiece is such a vague word many people could interpret it many different ways.

    1. I think that, yes, there are different levels of masterpiece not just one. Everyone sees art in a different way meaning if I think something is a masterpiece doesn't mean someone else will.

  24. The concept of a masterpiece in itself is hard to grasp. we all know that a work of art can always be changed or altered in some way, it's never perfect. But, I believe that for something to truly be considered a masterpiece, the creator of that work of art must first believe that it is a masterpiece. We all may criticize work, but we are not the ones who inspired what is on the paper. The creator of that work of art must be proud of what they've done and see it as perfect for it is their own creativity that created that piece. And no, a masterpiece may not truly exist, but we all see certain works of art as a masterpiece because it is our own mind set and the creators of that piece elusive that their work is good enough to have the title of a masterpiece. As for what makes something a masterpiece... It really depends. I believe that all the elements in writing need to tie in together to create something powerful. Most importantly, a piece of art should speak to you. It should show emotion and scream something out. An amazing work of art tells a story and takes you through a journey, it's not just words or lines on a page; it means something.
