Society

Some of the writings I have seen my classmates write are flaws in society, so for today's thread, complete this statement:
"I wish society paid more attention to______." And explain why you wish this.
Talk about anything. Rape, politics, real life events. The sky is the limit.
Have a great weekend. :)

  1. I wish society paid more attention to the effort people make because a lot of the time they only credit the ones, so called, "good enough." So many people are out there trying, trying to get a job, graduate high school, graduate college, and even get noticed for their achievements. Yet, the people trying, who don't actually succeed, do not get credited. Everyone should though, everyone should get noticed for trying for something. So many people cannot get jobs because of not exceeding in school, but you know, school is hard for people, it truly can be and its unfair that they can't get a chance. The fact that we always have to live up to expectations and try and be our best, but why can't we just be ourselves and get credit? Why can't we impress the world with being who we are, not being who they want us to be? I just wish that society would notice that trying is an achievement itself, not only exceeding.

    1. I agree wholeheartedly with what you have to say... Sometimes the people who try the hardest are the people who fail to get recognized, and it's sad...

    2. I agree 100%. It's the worst feeling in the world to not be recognized in any way, even the littlest.

    3. This broke my heart, but I do have a follow-up question: why does the recognition matter? Why does the credit carry so much weight? Stefanie I think you hit on several topics within your post, and I was wondering if you could narrow your scope a little to draw out the ROOT of the problem. For example, is the real issue society not recognizing effort or society placing emphasis on the wrong endeavors?

    4. I cannot even bear to comment on this anymore. This is the second time--SECOND TIME--I have typed out a beautiful, detailed comment and it was gone. The first time I accidentally clicked "Sign Out", and the second time I finally clicked "publish" but was redirected to a "Sign In" page only to find that my comment didn't post. So you know what? I'm only writing one sentence of rebuttal here instead of my two previous comments that were gorgeous in my opinion. So here it goes: I disagree. And that's it folks.
      Sometimes I really hate technology.

  2. I wished society paid more attention to the things they deem as least importance. Why do we care more about football than people living on the streets. Society chooses to ignore these things and do what everyone else is doing.

    1. Where's the "falafel" button when you need one?! Football salaries are something that I've never been able to get over. Same with homelessness/poverty.

    2. I can relate, man. I only got a 27 on the ACT and the kid in my Algebra 2 class last year who copied off of everyone's homework all the time and slacked off in class got a full ride to college just for playing football. I think I missed the memo--if I'm a guy and I play a sport I can get a full ride but, oh hey, I'm a girl and I'm only working hard to make a GPA good enough for college. Oh well. C'est la vie, right?

  3. "I wish society paid more attention to__love____."

I have a very elaborate theory (ask me in person because I have not the finger strength to type it out here) that we could solve almost every problem with love. I just wish the world saw the hope that love offers.

  4. I wish society paid more attention to problems outside their direct community and comfort zone. People put so much work into their communities (which is incredible), but there are other places where people already live comfortably, and places where people have no idea where their next meal is coming from. It always confused me
how one man can make 100,000 a week and that can be the most someone can make in ten years. Although we don't see it so drastically where we live, I never liked the divide between the rich and the poor.

  5. I wish society paid more attention to society. And before you say "Stephanie that makes no sense", hear me out. The only thing that matters in most peoples life is media, and not in the good way. They spend countless hours watching stupid things about celebrities and sports. But what about the world around them. The world that is constantly swirling, that is breathing and living and changing every second. I wish society really paid attention to the countless lives lost and being born. I wish society paid attention to the 12 year old girl who was bullied to the point of suicide instead of the football player who made the most touch downs. Why don't we care about the fact that we are literally killing the earth that we walk on instead of how ugly a celebrity looks without makeup. Or even about the poor child that was playing in their front yard, absent minded of the gang members shooting up the neighborhood. All we care about is our egos and the lives of someone who, unfortunately, wont even remember your face or name. Why don't most people care about the well being of their neighbor, who they probably see every single day. Instead we are investing our time in trying to be someone else, not even ignoring anyone else. Why doesn't anyone seem to care about the women in the world. Who bring new life into this already dead world, hoping they will change it. Instead, the media focuses on how horrible feminism is and how it should stopped. What about women, old and young being raped or killed. Why does the media focus on what she was wearing and how she was "asking for it" instead of the actions and steps we should take to try and stop rape and killings of innocent women. Why don't we just focus on the world, the real one, instead of this "utopia" that the media builds to keep us in nostalgia.

  6. I wish society paid more attention to the world around them. Everyone seems to be on their phones or other electronics instead of being in the moment and enjoying life. My father used to joke around and say that people are communicating to the person next to them with their phones. I don't know if this is exaggerating, but it seems that where ever I look, the society is being taken over by media and apps. I agree that electronics are great, but, as I am a victim myself, it is being used too much.

    1. We are the technology generation, and I hate it. No one can put their phone down for 30 minutes without texting, tweeting, etc. And yes, I'm guilty as well. But I try to put it down and talk to my friends. no one values real life conversations anymore

  7. Okay, here's one: I wish society would pay more attention to how too often we wish anything of society when we should be out there making it happen. Being like the "sloth" and not wanting to go to school on Monday mornings is fun to joke and make memes about and all but at the end of the day, no matter how much you want to stay home and not do your homework and just go with the flow, you have to do something to get where you want to be. For example, I am currently in a play. The memorization of my lines don't just magically come to me. I have to literally sit down and study every line--even those of the entire cast-- and familiarize myself with the scenes. I have to find ways to make what I want happen. And essentially, that is what we do everyday. You don't have a ride to school because you missed your bus? You find a way. You lost your wallet in a store. You go out there and look for it. Your computer battery is on 2% and your run downstairs like I just did so you can charge it just in the nick of time. Is what I'm saying making sense?

    1. Are you saying we are lazy and you wish we were maybe more proactive?

    2. In a sense but not exactly. I am saying that when you really want something, you don't (or shouldn't) wait for it to happen. You go for it. You put yourself out there--out into the world and out of your comfort zone--to achieve it. We do this a lot of the time without even realizing it, but I feel we shouldn't just wish, we should do.

  8. I wish society would pay attention to themselves, as strange as that seems. Every person seems more and more concerned with the life others lead and the mistakes they make. I wrote a poem once called "The Social Norm" and it sort of encompassed everything I feel about this question. That poem poses the question that we are told to make our own decisions but are we really encouraged to make our own mistakes? I wish that society wasn't hoping for failure when someone tries a new perspective, however that is how I see the world as being. It is a cynical place. Society needs to break apart, I wish it payed more attention to their own individual thoughts and the greatness that could come from it. If each person took a step backward from the rash judgments they pass, they could better themselves as people, thus creating an entirely better society collectively. The root of the problem in the world lies within ourselves and it's our job to face it.

  9. I wish society paid more attention to creativity. Years ago, creativity and individuality flourished and you could never find anything similar to another. Today, all you see is similarity, and the only difference between two things is as simple as a color. Creativity is beautiful but society has twisted it's meaning and appearance to make things that ARE different seem weird. I have a strong opinion that the only way that society is going to change the way they think is by us thinking that way ourselves. Because really, society is just us.

    1. so are you saying that you wish society realized being different is okay or creativity is different?

    1. really short (which isn't a bad thing) but I agree. We are the change we want to see.

  11. I agree. I begin to judge something or someone based off something I don't do or i find weird, and I'll admit it. But I try to stop myself and think well everyone isn't like me or they live life differently. No one should be treated differently because they're different. We deserve to be treated respectfully and equally.

  12. I wish society would pay more attention to people as people, not fractions of a whole or pieces of a puzzle. We have a problem as a society to stereotype, group people together, or assume, to judge, to criticize. Automatically, if a person is from the MiddleEast, they're a terrorist, or if someone is Asian, they're beyond intelligent. If someone is blonde-haired, that makes them stupid. I could go for days, DAYS, and I wish it would just stop. Why do we have to simplify other people, break them down into one piece of a puzzle when we don't know how beautiful the rest of the puzzle could be?

  13. I wish society paid more attention to the people who are overlooked. The problems that are overlooked. Society is people, so why does society overlook so many problems?

    ReplyDelete
  14. I wish society paid more attention to everyone and not just the people that we rule as "important" (celebrities, government officials, etc.). I wish there was a way that everyone knew that they were important, and not just another person that no one cares about. I wish that there was a way to let everyone know that we all care. (sorry if this makes no sense whatsoever)

  15. To expand on what Katelynn said, I wish society paid more attention to, not so much as the kids who are overlooked, as much as the kids who are swept under the rug. Media will focus on sexuality, but what about gender? They will focus on promoting equality, yet I feel that nobody really elaborates on what is unequal to begin with. For example, I feel that once people have marriage equality in all states, they're going to say "well! our job here is done; the gays got what they needed!" when in actuality, there is such a long way to go for anybody on that spectrum. As a transgender person (ah! yes! boom, there's a way to come out!), I wish society would focus less on what they believe needs to be done, and more on what ACTUALLY needs to be done in order to create more supportive environments for all people.

  16. i think society should be paying more attention to mental disorders and dieases. i see them being romanticized almost daily, and the fact that teens think that having depression, ptsd, add/adhd, anxiety of any sort, etc. makes me sick to my stomach because of dealt with many mental disorders throughout my immediate and extended family and none of them are cute, funny, or romantic. suicide is a JOKE to so many people at this point, and that's not the way things should be. relationships and lives are ruined because of mental problems, which is why society should pay a larger piece of mind rather than being ignorant.

  17. I wish society paid more attention to practicing what they preach. I'm not saying this in every circumstance, but in the act of always saying that we need to change our society to make it better, improve ourselves, and making this earth a more enjoyable world. But what no one does is act on these things. We say it, and some of us mean it, but how many of us can say we do something to help make a change? As people, we need to stop being so self centered and ignorant, and be welcoming to change and differences in our world.

  18. I wish society would pay more attention to people and their feelings. People are always told that they need to be themselves and not cover up who they are, yet they become judged about it, nobody really cares of how they feel. I mean yeah,i know, being perfect is great and whatever, but nobody is and trying to make them perfect destroys their real selves.People start neglecting each others feelings and tell them what is wrong with them. I wish that society would take a moment and understand people and understand what they feel.

  19. I wish that society paid more attention to individuals. We are always categorizing people according to their age, gender, career, education, race, etc. But just because two people have the same career, or are the same age doesn't mean that they are anything alike. We too often focus on the outsides of people, the artificial, replaceable components of people instead of the core, unchangeable characteristics. If we are going to categorize people, shouldn't we be doing it according to what really matters? No one cares to actually talk to each other and find out what they are truly like. We are too busy looking to see if they are wearing the right clothes, going to the right places, saying the right things, or having the best phones or biggest houses. The truth is those things don't matter in the long run. Trends change. Society should be paying more attention to people as individuals.

  20. I "wish" I could help give more people recognition. I wish that people's actions went noticed. I wish that more people found kindness in their hearts. I wish that I could share all the things I found beautiful. I wish people weren't cruel. I wish that more often people took the time of day to appreciate the small things in life. I know that there are kind people in this world. I know that not everyone is ignorant. I know that I fall victim to being a flawed human being. I know that people do enjoy to appreciate this world we live in. I know optimism is hard to find, but I also know that it takes one person to change things. One person to create a moment. And others that share a common interest or goal to help make a difference.

  21. I wish society paid more attention to our history. If that means taking a class or reading a book, by all means. I wish we understood the hardships that we used to face. I wish we paid more attention to working hard and what it truly means to earn something & not by taking shortcuts, because before shortcuts you had to figure it out the hard way right? So we can't forget what it means to work hard, we can't forget where we came from before the shortcut.

  22. I think society needs to pay more attention to the fact that human beings are just human beings. when we see an interracial couple walking down the street, we shouldn't even think about the fact that they are of a different skin color. we should just see them as human beings. & when we meet s mixed child, no one should say "oh he's cool because he's mixed" or "he's a bad person because he's mixed" we should just see another human being.
