Bearing the Darkness (South AND Central)...

You're alone. You're in perpetual darkness. Darkness so deep you can feel its weight. "Leaping and wide." Exposed solitude. Between the roars of your whispered breaths, straining for peace, you hear music rush over you. Softly marching in the distance until it engulfs you, this song becomes your light, and with these notes, these words, you are no longer alone.

What song would you take with you to bear the darkness?

-ONE song.
-Artist.
-A link to listen.
-Paste the line, or select lines (NOT the whole song), that made you pick THIS song that would be your light, your crutch.
-Creatively articulate to us WHY you chose the song that you did.

The darkness is coming. Prepare.

    And life passes you by
    Don't be wasting your time
    On your own
You always try to see yourself
Through the eyes of someone else
    ---
This song is just filled with so much hope and in a dark place, this one would carry me on. Kodaline is just peaceful and it would keep me calm. I don't want life to pass me by, not in darkness. I wanna be able to see the world. One day, the darkness will be over.

  3. The song I would take into the darkness would be Immortals by Fall Out Boy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l9PxOanFjxQ
"I'll be the guard dog of all your fever dreams,"
I chose this song because to me its kind of inspiring. It keeps repeating the lines "We could be immortals" and that just inspires me to like not give up with anything. The line that made me pick this song gives me a sort of sense of security, like someone is watching over me. The song is just like an anchor for me, helps me keep reassurance that we are all invincible and we have strength. Thats why I chose Immortals.

  4. The song that I would bring to the darkness is Say Goodbye by Krewella. The lyrics that would keep me going are:

This can’t be how it ends
    Wasted in ignorance
The bullets in your breath are
All I know, all I know
    I’ll never comprehend
Why you left me for dead
    Promises broke and bent
    I’m all alone, all alone

I would choose this song because the first lines strike hope in my heart because it is telling me that things can't end like this; things must get better. I love the emotion that goes behind all of the lyrics and the poetic expression of the song. I would suggest that you listen to the whole song because I could not choose just one part of the song.

"How can I relate to somebody who can't speak? It feels like I'm just treading water. Is it the same for you?"
Antichrist, while it is not a song that pulsates hope, it is one that makes you feel less alone, that someone is in it the same situation. It offers solace in the essence of being helpless. The lyric "Is it the same for you?" really gets me in this song because it is almost a cry out for help. Being in the perpetual darkness would break apart your soul, and you would want to cry for some sort of sympathy, and this song would cure the pain that being alone would cause you.

    1. Where is this person's hope coming from? Just a simple thought is supposed to comfort you in your darkest time? Isn't listening to this song just a temporary relief of pain? Why not look for something that has eternal relief?

    2. Katie, I have to disagree with you. I, myself, do love this song and it was one of my choices. This song is kind of one of those songs that gets you thinking and I think it was an interesting choice. And Tessa did state this song would help you feel not alone. Thank you for your feeback.

    3. I see what you are saying. I do agree that this song can give you some hope. But what is a moment's worth of hope compared to a lifetime of relief and KNOWING that you will get out of the darkness?

      Delete
    4. This song brings me peace of mind and allows me to stop worrying that I am the only person going through something difficult. It's a song of losing and restoring hope, at least it is for me. I find comfort in the fact that I wouldn't feel alone in it, and that is how I KNOW I would get out of the darkness. I'm sorry you don't like my song choice, but I'm sticking with it, and I think it would bring me out of the darkness and into not just "a moments worth of hope" but a "lifetime of relief" to use your words.

      Delete
    5. From what I've read, ladies, Katie is not referring to the song choice. I think the focus is zoomed in a little too tight here so we should all zoom out. Katie is talking about the general idea that a song shouldn't have to save you from your worst nightmare. A song has an ending to it. You can keep hitting the replay button but you will only be re-living the same lyrics and melodies. Katie is saying that music shouldn't be our escape, nor should anything really. Why are we escaping things? Which is why I am not too keen on this assignment (sorry Torres). I haven't listened to this song but I am sure it is lovely. You have the right to post this song and defend it but I just wanted to point out that Katie was speaking in universal concept terms.

This is a very uplifting song, and it would give me hope that one day I'd break out of the darkness, especially with these lyrics promising that I'm not going to be left behind, not forgotten. I love this song, this band, and these lyrics. "Unity" would become my light in the perpetual darkness.

    1. This song holds so much power, especially knowing the artist and knowing the story that makes up her entire EP. I know exactly what you mean about how the raw love Ashley expresses in this song would help pull you out of a dark place. The realization that someone could feel that much is reassurance enough, to keep you from losing yourself.

    4. The EP this song is from tells a story throughout the entirety of a girl being in love but it's so toxic. Somehow she just can't make herself leave though she knows its tearing her apart. It's called Room 93 in reference to the hotel room where most of the encounters with her and her boyfriend, or whatever you want to call him, take place. The "is there somewhere you can meet me?" lyric refers to her needing to see him no matter what.

    favorite lines:
    Something happened to my imagination
    This situation's becoming dire
My tree house is on fire
And for some reason I smell gas on my hands
This is not what I had planned
This is not what I had planned.

    ............................................

I chose this song because twenty one pilots is my favorite music artist and I thoroughly enjoy all of their music, however, "Forest" is probably my al time favorite song. Tyler (lead singer) writes his own music from his own experiences, and I just like the fact that the song is real and though it's explaining him destroying himself in a way, he puts it along with happy sounding music so you really have to listen to the lyrics and how he says them to get the true meaning of his message being put forth.

  11. I chose the song There is A Light That never Goes Out by The Smiths. I chose this song mostly because of the lines
    Take me out tonight
Where there's music and there's people
    And they're young and alive
    and the lines,
    Take me out tonight
Because I want to see people and I
    Want to see life.
I found these lines so incredibly beautiful. These lines make me want to live, they make me want to go out and see the world and enjoy it. I think that even if I was in the pit of darkness, this song could lead me out. Sorry I put too many lines, I felt they were needed to give the song justice and make the reasoning for picking this song legit.

  12. My song would be Fear and Loathing by Marina and the Diamonds. I just feel like if I really needed to see my way out of the darkness, I would have to acknowledge the hopelessness before finding my way away from it. It strikes me as this weird, melancholic kind of hopefulness. Like, I wouldn't want a song specifically about hope, because if I'm hopeless in darkness, I'd want to neutralize the feeling. I don't really know how to explain it, it just helps me feel less alone when the song is about whatever I'm feeling.

For my song, I chose Scare Away the Dark by Passenger. Not only is it about escaping darkness, but everytime I listen to it, I discover something subtle in the lyrics I had never seen prior.

" Can you feel, feel like you still have a choice
If we all light up we can scare away the dark "

These lyrics would help me keep sane while in darkness, because it reveals a sense of purpose while inside a darkness as thick as black smoke. It would help me strive for myself, even though I cannot see which choices I will take. I just believe that having a song tell you what to do, and how to make decisions for yourself, regardless of the consequences.

  14. The song I would take with to bear the darkness is The Light Behind Your Eyes by My Chemical Romance.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=76WJJ57YoG0

"As we fade in the dark
Just remember you will always burn as bright
Be strong and hold my hand"

I picked this song because it has been one of my favorite songs for awhile now. The song has always helped me through a lot of things and I believe that this song would be a nice song to be lost in the dark with. I picked the lyrics because those three lines have been some of my favorite lyrics in the song. love this song and wouldn't mind being lost in the darkness with it.

The song I chose is to help me through the darkness would be the song "Limbs" by Widowspeak. I decided this song would make me feel stronger the lyrics, "What to do with working limbs, So he told me - sink or swim?" Those lyrics and the way the artist sings them, somewhat helps me decide what I would possibly do in that situation. Should I sink further into the never ending darkness, that I watch envelope me or chose to go and fight through the fear of being along or having no one? These other lines, "I did what he said, Went underwater instead, Everything looks the same, Everything looks the same." They kind of reassure me, yet at the same time, consume me in my fear of darkness. It's like saying that if I don't fight, I will fall deeper into darkness, but in the same line telling me that continuing to go on and defeat the fears that I feel when I'm vulnerable and alone, will not change. Though I feel that I would not like it to change, so the lyrics really do comfort me, that if I were to feel serenity in darkness I would feel it out of darkness as well. The whole concept is somewhat confusing, but my mind is kind of a jumbled mess.

When the gusts came around to blow me down
Held on as tightly as you held on to me

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QB0ordd2nOI

I would pick this song because it is so meaningful and I could listen to it all day. It's an orchestra so it sounds amazing, and there is so much more to each of the lyrics than you see. The melody of the music adds to the lyrics and I get lost when I hear this song. It's like for a short period of time I'm somewhere else, and I think that if I was lost in the darkness this song would lift me out. It is only a 6 minute song but when I listen to it, it's all consuming and when it's over I feel like I've been gone for hours.

This song (and all of her songs) are amazingly written and the lyrics helped me through one of the darkest times in my life. The "It's always darkest before the dawn" line is sung so beautifully and it just makes me feel so untroubled. The particular lines that stuck out to me:
The lights in the sky weren't that far away
Living in the vastness of outer space
It's really just the mellow feel to the song that makes me feel a light enter my dark veins. and as the tempo picks up its like you're free . free from the darkness. and then when it comes back to the verse like "All my life I've been a star
Holding a light up in the dark"
And then you're over come with this darkness but when he says "all the waves in the atmosphere" it's this sudden urge of inspiration to me. He's reaching out to the light thats not the far away like a star and even though the star is so small in such a vast place, he finds the light and has a really nice voice to this I think

  20. When the darkness is concaving, I would want to listen to this song. I feel like I could make it through the darkness with this song and still see the light

    Candour by Neck Deep

    "Yesterday saw you missing,
Drawn to the light in the distance
Holding her hand while she listened,
She told him how much she would miss him
Said his goodbyes to his children,
And let the weight fade away"
"I'll keep a moment sealed in time inside a picture frame,
A small reminder of the days I thought would never change"

This song always reminds me of my friends and my family. Every time I hear it I feel like I'm with my friends. I would get sad thinking about them but in the same sense I'd hope they're thinking of me. I hope that I run across their mind every once in a while, because in the darkness I'd still think of them.

I'll paste the link below because it won't paste right now.

Just not for long, for long,

The reason I chose this song is because it reminds me of the feeling of someone wanting to be with me. It sounds babyish or girlish but i don't care, I like feeling of being liked and i wouldn't change it for the work. Even for a masterpiece that I was destined to have.

    Now I’m alive
Oh You gives peace to the restless
And joy to homes that are broken
    I see You now
    In You I’m found

    [CHORUS]
And You opened the door for me
    And you laid down
Your life to set me free
All that I am will serve You Lord
And You opened my eyes to see

I'll gladly take her place if you'll let me
    Make this my last request
Take me out of this world
God, please don't take the girl"

I love these lyrics because they give me hope that someone out there loves you so much that they're willing to die in order for you to live. The boy in the song first rejected the girl, but finally admitted his love for her. Right there shows you that someone that you think hates you, can actually be the love of your life, and you could end up spending the rest of your life with him or her.

This song is a cover of The Beatles' Hey Jude. This song isn't extremely deep. It's simple and straight to the point. Plus, Joe Anderson has a lovely voice. People wouldn't say "oh this is a beautiful song." It's not about some super deep situation. It's easily relatable and people can relate to it in different ways. There's no vibrato or any runs in his voice. It's straightforward. And that's what I like about it.
Hey jude, don't make it bad.
Take a sad song, and make it better.
Remember to let her into your heart.
Then you can start to make it better.

This song can be about what anyone wants it to be. It can be about a girl. It can be about a situation specific to that person. It doesn't matter. For those of you who don't like the sound of The Beatles, *cough Torres cough*, this is a lovely cover.

    3. I agree that this song does hold such simplicity that it gives hope. It offers a temporary happiness and that is all that some people need.

I decided to chose this song because it is powerful and timeless. There are no lyrics because it is instrumental. I like that as it goes along there is more emphasis and strength in the tunes and every instrument comes together into a cohesive and beautiful piece that makes you appreciate it so much more. I also like the ending because its very simplistic and small but leaves you inspired.

  36. This song perfectly describes everything I have been. My past. My story. This is the song of those before me and after me. You cannot listen to this song and not feel the life it brings out of you. Years ago, my family all lived not too far away from each other and we were always together. But times changed, and we all moved even farther away. It may sound like nothing to anyone, but it means everything to me. The stories in our old homes, the house that we built ended up building us. This song takes me back to swimming pool shenanigans, a fish buried by a backyard pond, bike rides around a neighborhood, Sunday lunches after church. This song takes me back to where I can go no longer.

    Yuki Matsui: OVERTAKE

There is nom lyrics to post because it's an acoustic guitar piece, the reason the piece is so powerful is because it doesn't need lyrics or words to express a story, the music takes you on a journey and thats all it tells you, it's never the same no matter how many times you listen, it opens your mind and you can take your own journey put your own thoughts into his work..and if your going to take solace in anything, why not take solace in something endless?

  38. Frank Zappa - Muffin Man
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ptoN-5QE0Lw

"Some people like cupcakes better. I for one
    Care less for them!"
Arrogantly twisting the sterile canvas snoot
of a fully charged icing anointment utensil
He pools forth a quarter-ounce green rosette (oh ah yuk yuk.
    let's try that again . . .!)

Most of Frank Zappa's lyrics/composition is so ridiculously hilarious that it cheers me up. No matter how angry or upset I am I get instant gratification from listening to this song in all its absurdity.

  39. Tenerife Sea by Ed Sheeran

"You got the kind of look in your eyes
As if no one knows anything but us"

"Should this be the last thing I see
I want you to know it's enough for me
'Cause all that you are is all that I'll ever need"

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27kdHu2gQQI

This song just calms me and reminds me that all of the things that make me happy in my life are good enough. This songs shows me what the light in my life is. In the song Ed talks about how he fell in love with this girl and why he fell in love with her. Also, in the two lines i chose they're important to me because I know the feeling where you see the person you love the most and that person, or even yourself, has that look in there eyes where you both do know something that everyone else do not. The next three lines I can really relate too because, if you love something so much you won't mind having that thing or person be the last thing you actually see when you die, and it will be all you need for the rest of your life.

  40. Wires by Sleeping at Last
    "With one eye closed,
    We'll draw back,
Catch our breath and let go..."
"If life is a series of narrow escapes,
    We're shifting our weight
    In this tightrope ballet."
The first time I heard this song I was at a dance convention. The lights were dimmed down and the choreographer blasted the music through out the room. Then she started teaching us the combination. Through out this two hour class the world seemed to disappear and I fell in love with dance even more. I would pick this song to help me through the darkness because it would make me want to dance, which would then make me disappear into my own world forgetting about the perpetual darkness.

  42. The song I've chose is 'You' by Keaton Henson. I see this song as a letter from one lover to another. He sings about mourning and leaving, but in a calming, almost hopeful way. My favorite lyrics are "if you must mourn, mourn with the stars in the sky up above." I feel like in the darkness this song would create the feeling that someone is watching out for you. http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=f2fCcggNkTs

  43. At The Bottom of Everything by Bright Eyes

    Oh my morning's coming back
    The whole world's waking up
All the city buses swimming past
    I'm happy just because
I found out I am really no one

I chose this song because, even if it is kind of sad, its still uplifiting. I chose that line from the song because i felt like its meaning is very powerful. Even if you are shrouded in this darkness, thinking you are unimportant, the line says "im happy just because i found out i am really no one" which says alot. It is saying that even if you think you are less important than someone who is famous or

  44. Song: Courageous
    Artist: Megan Nicole
    Link to listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x9y4t7UcvfM
Line: "Spread your wings and fly above the clouds 'cause you are
    Courageous"
Reason: I chose this song because it reminds me to stay strong when darkness takes over. The song explains that everyone is the same but also different. We all have various emotions and colors that represent us, but no one is perfect. Everyone is amazing in their own way and you shouldn't let others get in the way of what you want for yourself. Don't listen to what others say about you because thy don't define you. Everyone has issues in life, but no one can actually KNOW exactly what you've gone through. Others can only understand and relate to what you have experienced in your life, but no one KNOWS exactly how you feel or actually KNOW what you have been through. Every time I listen to this song, it reminds me that I am a ray of light that has worth in this world. It reminds me that no matter how many times I am put down or bullied, I should stand tall and not let them block my path. This song show me that I am a ray of light. I have issues just like everyone else, but no one really KNOWS what I've been through. Words and people can knock me down, but I will get right back up every time. I am my own collage of different elements and components. I am the light that will lead the way to my desires. I will spread my wings and soar because I am courageous just like everyone else in this world!
