Below are lyrics to a song that tells a story. It's Hero of War by Rise Against. Did the song impact you at all? How do you think writers can fit a story within such a small time frame? What other poems/songs do you know that tell a story?

I feel like it doesn't matter if a story is told in an hour or one minute. What matters is how you portrayed your thoughts and feelings to connect with the reader which could take less then 5 minutes or much longer than 5 minutes. Also, I feel like every piece of art (whether it be a song, poem, painting, etc.) has a story behind it which is how it was created in the first place.
ReplyDeleteI believe it isn't the time frame in which you tell the story, but the story itself. I think it is possible to tell a story no matter how much time you have. There are many pieces of art that have a story behind them like the poem "Alone" by Edgar Allan Poe and many other poems and songs.
ReplyDeleteI think that it's important to realize that a song's lyrics are quite simply a poem. Poems, while they can be long or short, typically tell a story in a more concise way than a novel might. So many songs and poems alike tell a story of some sort. It's important to know that the length of paper or time spent on it does not decrease the worth or the moral of the story itself. It might be difficult to create a hard hitting story in such a small amount of time, but that is what makes the creative process such a great thing, at least in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteMany songs and poems are told in a short time, but tell a story. They are always very impactful to many readers and listeners. The writers had to give a lot of detail to let the audience know what is happening, but cannot put too much detail to take too long.
ReplyDeleteTime I think is something you put into it. The lyrics are alright, the song isn't my favorite. But it does tell a story. I have re-read this prompt and I'm not really sure how to respond but I think no matter how long anything is, it can be powerful no matter what based on words. It touches people differently. No matter how long, it's all just different. I'm not sure how to put my thoughts into this comment.
ReplyDeleteI think that artists and writers are able to create these stories in such short periods of time because they've mastered the concept of choosing the most powerful and fitting words. It's about knowing which words are going to create the feeling you want to portray, which words are going to activate the reader's or listener's senses. By making these decisions a story can be told in any length or amount of time. It's not really about how fast the story is told, but more about how well.
ReplyDeleteA story can be told in one word or thousands. No matter the word count or how long it takes to make one or hear one, its still a story and it can still impact someone greatly. Writers who tell stories can tell them any way they want even in such small words. Word count or time frame has nothing to do with effecting the story but it effects the reader by leaving them with such few or more words than they could grasp.

DeleteI think that if the writer has experienced this feeling or time, not just seen it, they know the exact feelings that are the strongest. They can pick and choose which they think will impact a person the most, kind of like the listener is experiencing that with them.
ReplyDeleteI'm not really sure how to answer this question, but I'll try:
ReplyDeleteThe word count/page count doesn't really matter. A book can be just over two hundred pages and be one of the most impactful and inspirational pieces of art ever created. Examples: We Were Liars, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Animal Farm, etc. The Great Gatsby clocks in at a mere page count of 180, and is also considered to be one of the best books ever written, (some people would even consider it the best book ever written, as subjective as they may be). Authors/artists/musicians can fit such impactful stories into shorter pieces of art, I feel, because they're not thinking about the page count, word count, length of the song; they're thinking about the story, and the way they want to tell it. Basically, I'm saying that there are no limits when it comes to writing a story - you're not confined to three minutes of a song, two hundred pages of a book, only two pages of a poem, or an hour of a movie, and because of that, authors can fit stories into whichever amount of time or pages they feel is right for the story. Writing isn't really about fitting a story into a certain amount of time/pages, but about the story within those time/pages.

DeleteI love how you explained this
DeleteI think that writers are able to tell a story in such a short amount of time because they feel that's the time frame they need to tell the story. Of course they could tell the story in a longer period of time, but what if that's not satisfying enough for them? Maybe the story being told has so much more to it, and they're just not comfortable with giving away every single detail.
ReplyDeleteI've reread the question, and I'm not sure how to entirely answer it. But from what I've gathered, I think it's important to note that the length of a piece, whether in time or in words, isn't a very important factor in the act of it being powerful. A three word poem could be more powerful than a 500 page novel, it all comes down to the content and the amount of work put into the piece. I'm not a big fan of this song, but the story within the lyrics was evident, and thought provoking
ReplyDeleteRegardless of the length, a story can be told. Poems, such as a ballad can tell a story and there is no fashioned length at all. Stories as well do not need to be any certain length. Poems and prose are both able to hold a plot, the only difference is it's format.
ReplyDeleteA story is a story, no matter how much time it takes to tell. The more time, obviously the more you can put it and explain it further, but I think it takes talent to be able to convey an experience that impacted you in five minutes or less. A song that tells a beautiful story is "Is There Somewhere" by Halsey. She tells how she's accidentally fallen in love and talking about how it happened, the consequences, etc.
ReplyDeleteA story can take any amount of time and be powerful no matter if its in hours or minutes, The reason it can be so powerful and really touch you emotionally is that the person telling the story can have such a strong relation and understanding to what they are speaking, They have the wisdom to portray it in poetic ways and many creative styles that will get you feeling so many emotions, it's overbearing, Any person has the ability to unravel a beautiful story on paper or speaking it in less than five minutes if they have the sense of understanding the subject they are writing about. As for a song that unfolds a story within its lyrics I would chose the song "Son" by the band Warpaint, its really beautiful and has such pretty lyrics, if you enjoy indie music, I'd really suggest you to all listen.
ReplyDeleteI loved every part of this poem! I loved how you colored the font of some of the descriptive words, it made them jump right it my face. I also loved being able to imagine every stanza in my head as I read it. All in all, amazing piece of work
ReplyDelete"i told them to stop... but i joined in" pretty much the only thing i could get from that entire video. No matter who's side you're on, it all boils down to just humans. A man being tortured is not ok depending on who's uniform he wears. Every one, even on both sides has a family to go home to, even if they don't have a US flag on their arm.
ReplyDeleteI think the content and detail of the story effects how quickly or slowly it can be told. Like, the entirety of Harry Potter couldn't have been told within one song, or it would never have had the effect on people that it did when told throughout 7 books. Songs can hold really intense stories (for example, "Genius Next Door" by Regina Spektor? that song is a ROLLERCOASTER of emotion) but there are some stories that are meant to be told with more description and need more time to tell it. I hope that made sense?
ReplyDeleteI don't think the time frame of a song or poem have anything to do with the impact of it. there are hundreds of poems that are only a few short lines but when you really look into them, they can change the way you see things on a subject. sometimes a poem that is five lines long can have more of an impact than a story that is three pages long. what matters is that you put yourself into the writing.
